VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES - JOB DESCRIPTIONS | ||||||||||||

KITCHEN HELPER - FOOD PREP (9:00am - 12:30pm) This is a morning job, helping to prepare food in the kitchen. Help with chopping and mixing ingredients for the nutritious dining room meals. | ||||||||||||

KITCHEN HELPER - DISHES (9:00am - 12:30pm or 12:30pm - 3:30pm) People are needed to help with the dishes for either the morning or afternoon shifts. The automatic dishwasher does most of the work, but dishes have to be prepared for the machine and pots need to be done by hand. Some lifting is required. | ||||||||||||

TABLE WIPING (10:30am - 12:30pm or 12:30pm - 2:30pm) Enjoy a couple of hours over the lunch time meeting people, while wiping tables and carrying the occasional tray from the food line to the tables. | ||||||||||||

CATERING SPECIAL EVENTS The LSCO dining room caters to special events for members and non-members. Help is needed to set tables for these events, large or small, and with the serving of the food, clean up, and doing dishes. These events take place on weekends, during an evening or during operational hours. | ||||||||||||
|
SPECIAL EVENTS Volunteers are required to help with a wide variety of special events. The various jobs would range from: decorating tables/rooms, taking tickets at the door, judging events, and entertainment of all types. | ||||||||||||
|
IN HOUSE BINGO This program runs on Wednesday afternoons in gym #2, with three individuals running the program.

WINNERS BINGO Every Monday and Thursday the LSCO runs the bingo program at Winners Bingo to raise money for the centre. Volunteers are needed to help at the bingo hall. Activities range from selling bingo cards to counting money in the office. The shift runs from 11am to 4pm. Lunch is provided. Rides can be arranged for those needing transportation from their home to the bingo, and back again. | ||||||||||||

COURSE INSTRUCTORS Individuals are required from time to time to teach new skills to the members of the LSCO programs include: arts/crafts, education and activity. | ||||||||||||
|
PROGRAM LEADERS Individuals are required to assist with drop in programs. They would help with setting the equipment up and taking attendance. | ||||||||||||
|
CARE CAR DRIVERS Some of our members do not have means of transportation, making it difficult and expensive to attend medical appointments. Our Care Car drivers pick members up at their homes and take them to their appointment, wait for them and then take them home again. An hour of so of your time, as frequently as you wish, helps provide this invaluable service. **Care Car Drivers are required to have a minimum $2 million liability insurance. | ||||||||||||

ADULT DAY PROGRAM This is a special program for physically and/or mentally challenged seniors, and takes place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Volunteers help by socializing with the patrons, assisting with activities and crafts, and help serve a snack. | ||||||||||||

KEEP IN TOUCH PHONING Volunteers phone seniors on a regular basis at a prearranged time. This acts as a safety check for those who live alone and provides daily contact for shut-ins. | ||||||||||||
|
HOSPITAL VISITING Hospitals and continuing care facilities can be lonely places for anyone. The hospital visitor visits seniors who have asked for someone to visit them in such a facility. Name tags and cards are available for the visitor's identification. | ||||||||||||
|
SOCIAL PROGRAMS At special occasions through the year, and every Friday lunch time, social and music programs take place. These programs provide much needed socialization for seniors. Helpers assist by preparing tables, serving refreshments and just visiting with the participants. Time commitment is about two hours. | ||||||||||||
|
RECEPTION DESK As people enter the Centre, they receive a warm greeting from a volunteer at the reception desk. The member services volunteer makes sure that everyone signs in as they enter, and offers directions to those who require it. Each volunteer works a two hour shift. | ||||||||||||
|
INTERPRETERS From time to time there is a need for volunteers who can speak or read a different language. These volunteers are called upon as needed to help relay a conversation or interpret a letter. | ||||||||||||
|
FUND-RAISING LEADERSHIP Volunteer leaders are needed to assist in the planning and coordination of fund-raising activities that the center is engaged in. | ||||||||||||
|
FUND-RAISING WORKERS Help is needed in putting planned fund-raising efforts into effect. Volunteers involved depend on the fund-raising activity, for example, it might be selling tickets at the centre or at other locations. | ||||||||||||
|
NEWSPAPER DELIVERY The LSCO publishes a FREE monthly newspaper that is distributed to numerous outlets in and out of the city. Volunteers (a driver and a helper) deliver the newspaper to these outlets using their own or a rented vehicle. During the following month volunteers check at the various outlets to insure that copies of the publication are still available. **Drivers using their own vehicle are required to have a minimum $2 million dollar liability insurance. | ||||||||||||

COMMITTEE MEMBERS The LSCO is run by a board of volunteers. Committees are responsible to report to the board for the different activities of the Centre. These committees are made up of volunteers. | ||||||||||||
|
BOUTIQUE CLERK The Clever Crafters Boutique is open to members and the public from Monday to Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Volunteers work two and half hour shifts arranging the articles made by members and selling them. Training is provided. | ||||||||||||
|
PHONERS Some projects require phone calls to inform the LSCO members of up coming events such as bake sales and garage sales. Phoning is usually done in one of our offices with a time commitment of an hour or two. | ||||||||||||
|
TICKET SELLERS Volunteers are recruited to sell tickets for the various special events that take place at the LSCO. It may include collecting names for help with activities. This is a great way to meet people. | ||||||||||||
|
MUSICIANS Music is an important part of many of our socialization programs, the Adult Day Program and special events. If you play an instrument and would like to entertain, please let us know. | ||||||||||||
|
LIBRARY The library at the LSCO is well used. Volunteers in the library keep the room tidy and help process the many book donations. |
