SUPPORT GROUPS

Support Groups are groups run by and for the participants. Through the group, participants can gain strength by sharing information, sharing support and sharing friendships.

Aging Meaningfully, Alcoholics Anonymous, Cansurmount, Caregiver Support Group, Celiac Support Group, Chinook Stroke Club, Diabetes Support Group, Heart to Heart, On Our Own, Osteoporosis Support Group, Prostate Cancer Support Group,  Reach To Recovery,  Trigeminal Neuralgia Support Group.

 

AGING MEANINGFULLY
A support group for seniors seeking greater self-insight for more effective living and improved quality of life,

Weekly sessions begin in  October am. Everyone is welcome at these confidential and most beneficial meetings.

ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS
The Saturday Eye Opener group meets every Saturday morning at
9:00am. This group of peers offers support to those individuals dealing with the effects of alcoholism.

CANSURMOUNT
In partnership with the Cancer Society this group gives emotional support, education and practical ideas to anyone who has had a cancer experience or has an interest in cancer. This program meets jointly with the Prostate Cancer Support Group on the second Thursday of the month at
7:00pm.

CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP
Caregiving can be extremely rewarding, but extremely isolating no matter whether the receiver is in your home, their home, a lodge or a continuing care facility. The objective for this group will be to provide emotional support as well as valuable advice for all caregivers. Any caregiver is welcome to attend these confidential meetings held on the third Wednesday of each month at
1:30pm.

CELIAC SUPPORT GROUP
Celiac Disease can begin at any age and can have debilitating symptoms. Everyone who has Celiac Disease, or has an interest in it, is invited to attend their informative meetings. The group meets 3 times a year (January, May and September) on the last Monday of the month at
7:00pm.

CHINOOK STROKE CLUB
A self help group for people who have had a stroke, head injury or aphasia involving education, support, entertainment and discussion. The group meets on the second Wednesday of the month, September through June, at
2:00pm.

DIABETES SUPPORT GROUP
This group meets every third Wednesday evening of the month at
6:30pm from September through June. The program includes presentations and educational activities; comradeship, sharing and mutual help for people who have diabetes, their families and any others with an interest in the disease.

HEART TO HEART
Meets every second Wednesday evening of the month at
7:00pm from September through June. The aim of the group is to support heart patients and their families with programs that include educational and social activities as well as an in-hospital visiting program.

ON OUR OWN
A support group for widows and widowers that holds information meetings every two months and a coffee, social hour every Wednesday in the
LSCO Dining Room at 2:00pm. There is also the opportunity for the recently bereaved to meet separately and share their grief.

OSTEOPOROSIS SUPPORT GROUP
Education, companionship, and awareness are part of these group meetings. The group meets at
2:00pm on the third Monday of the month from September through June and is open to anyone with an interest in osteoporosis. Guest speakers, together with the sharing of information and experiences are involved in these meetings.

PROSTATE CANCER SUPPORT GROUP
In partnership with the Cancer Society the
LSCO hosts the Prostate Cancer Support Group which meets on the second Thursday of months from October to May between 7:00pm and 9:00pm with the Cansurmount group. This group is committed to help people learn more about Prostate Cancer and offers support to those who are affected by Prostate Cancer.  

REACH TO RECOVERY

In partnership with the Cancer Society this group offer support and educational insight to those who have been diagnosed, or are survivors of, breast cancer.  They meet on the third Tuesday of every month at 7:00pm.

TRIGEMINAL NEURALGIA SUPPORT GROUP
This group meets every second Saturday of the month from September through June at
2:00pm and is open to anyone who wishes to learn more about Trigeminal Neuralgia. The program aims to support TN sufferers and their families, while increasing awareness of TN. It involves education, guest speakers and open discussion.

 

HOME SUPPORT PROGRAMS

 

Many older people desire to remain independent in their own homes and generally do much better there. These services may assist them in maintaining their independence but not put their health at risk.

LAWN CARE SERVICE

Eligible seniors may obtain a reduced rate for this service offered through the LSCO.

SNOW REMOVAL

Like the lawn care program, seniors may qualify for a reduced rate. Call for information and cost.

GROCERY SHOPPING

Transportation is provided to and from your home to a local grocery store the first and third Tuesday of the month. Groceries may be delivered by the store to your home or you may carry one bag home with you. Call 320-2222 to confirm your ride.

KEEP IN TOUCH

A daily telephone call from a volunteer is a safety check for seniors living alone, giving daily contact and increased reassurance.

FRIENDLY VISITING

A volunteer will visit isolated seniors on a regular basis bringing warmth and personal friendship into their lives.

 

TRANSPORTATION PROGRAMS

CARE CARS

Members of the LSCO who need transportation to medical appointments can call the LSCO to arrange a ride to and from. Volunteers are encouraged to become a part of this program if they can devote an hour or so once or twice a month.

SOCIAL PROGRAMS

HEALTH & WELLNESS PROGRAMS

Programs and seminars that feature guest speakers discussing various health, financial and legal topics.

WELLNESS SCREENINGS

Screening sessions to check various aspects of your health. Such as hearing, sight, blood sugar levels, blood pressure and nutrition.

BLOOD PRESSURE MONITORING

There is a blood pressure monitor conveniently located at the LSCO so that you can keep a record of your blood pressure and heart rate.

PODIATRIST

A foot doctor visits the LSCO every 6th Wednesday. No appointment is necessary for this service that is covered by Alberta Health and Wellness. You must bring your Alberta Health Care Card Phone the centre for more details.

 

Peer Support Programs

CANSURMOUNT SUPPORT GROUP

A group that gives emotional support, education and practical ideas to anyone who has had a cancer experience or has an interest in cancer. This program, which is in partnership with the Cancer society, meets on the second Thursday of each month at 7:00pm.

SATURDAY MORNING EYE OPENER GROUP

This Alcoholics Anonymous group meets every Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. They offer support to anyone dealing with alcoholism.

SUNSET ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS

This group meets in Room C and D every Monday (except holidays) and Thursday at 8:00 p.m. Support for anyone dealing with the effects of alcoholism.

 

ADVOCACY PROGRAMS

LEGAL ADVICE

Appointments are available on the 2nd Wednesday of each month between 10:00am and 12:00 noon to give advice on any legal problems. 15 minute appointments are available at no charge.

INCOME TAX RETURN ASSISTANCE

In March and April of each year volunteers are available to assist individuals with low to moderate incomes with completing simple returns.

INFORMATION

A Directory of Services for seniors programs is available upon inquiry at the Administration Desk. Assistance with forms and correspondence is available upon request. Information on programs, benefits, assistance programs and services can also be obtained.

COMMUNITY INTERNET ACCESS

The LSCO is a member of the Lethbridge Community Network providing free internet access. There are 2 computers available for internet, email and word processing services in Room F as well as 3 additional computers in the glass house for your use. Printing is available for a small fee.

SENIORS HELPING SENIORS

The LSCO will assist seniors and families to match individuals for tasks such as interpreting correspondence, changing light bulbs, etc., and will assist in matching individuals for hospital visiting and peer support.

LSCO ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS COMMITTEE

A group of senior volunteers, who are working with Lethbridge Regional Police Services to bring information and awareness on Elder Abuse to seniors and to the community. Information includes what Elder Abuse is, where advice can be obtained and how such abuse can be reported. Presentations for groups can be arranged by phoning the LSCO.

WISE OWLS

Seniors educate their peers on scams affecting seniors in this fraud prevention program. Presentations can be arranged by phoning the LSCO.  This program is run in conjunction with the Lethbridge Regional Police Services.

 

ADULT DAY PROGRAM

The Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization operates a Senior Adult Day Program for the purpose of providing a social outing on a regular basis for senior men and women who are physically or mentally challenged.

Once a week Tuesday -Wednesday - or Thursday

Afternoons 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

COST: 1 day/wk $10.00 per month

             2 days/wk $20.00 per month

             3 days/wk $30.00 per month

Location: Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization 500 – 11 St South.

Transportation arrangements to and from this program is the responsibility of the member or caregiver. The HandiBus (Access A Ride) service is recommended.
