VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES - JOB DESCRIPTIONS

PLEASE CALL Marcie Stork at (403) 320-2222 ext. 31 TO VOLUNTEER!

What great weather we have been having! Moisture and warmer temperatures are always welcome!

As I write this we are very close to a sell-out for “Old West Favorites”, I will let you know how wonderful the show and the volunteers were next month! I will say that it has been a great pleasure to work with Jim Hahn from Nord-Bridge. The planning has gone so smoothly for this fundraiser that Jim and I have joked about creating a crisis situation just so we know how to deal with it! I imagine there will be more joint fundraising efforts in our future!

I have started planning for the next fundraiser, “LSCO Rocks the Block”!! (Thanks for the great name Jodie!) On Saturday June 5, 2010 we will be having a ‘day of music’ out in Civic Field. I anticipate booking 7 or 8 different Lethbridge and area bands to play from noon to 9pm. We will have a ‘beverage area’ (do they still call them beer gardens?) and a BBQ going all day! We already have some amazing sponsors lined up – if you see Dale Martin Jr. make sure to thank him!

I am putting together a special event committee for this event so if you are interested in helping with the planning of this fundraiser, please come see me! This is going to be a great day for all!

Now on to volunteer news. I am in need of volunteers to work on call in the dining room, wiping tables. If you are interested, please let me know! If you are interested in any of the volunteer opportunities at the LSCO, please come see me!!

CARE CAR DRIVERS

Some of our members do not have any means of transportation, making it difficult and expensive to attend medical appointments. Our Care Car drivers pick seniors up at their homes and take them to their appointment, wait for them and then take them home again. An hour of so of your time, as frequently as you wish, helps provide the invaluable service.

ADULT DAY PROGRAM

This is a special program for physically and mentally challenged seniors and takes place on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons. Volunteers help by socializing with the patrons, assisting with activities and crafts, and help serve a snack.

KEEP IN TOUCH PHONING

Volunteers phone seniors on a regular basis at a prearranged time. This acts as a safety check for those who live alone and provides daily contact for shut-ins.

FRIENDLY VISITING

The friendly visitor brings warmth and personal friendship to lonely seniors. He/she is matched on a long term basis to provide companionship through weekly visits.

HOSPITAL VISITING

Hospitals and continuing care facilities can be lonely places for anyone.   The hospital visitor visits seniors who have asked for someone to visit them in such a facility.  Name tags and cards are available for the visitor’s identification.

SOCIAL PROGRAMS

At special occasions through the year, and every Friday lunch time, social and music programs take place. These programs provide much needed socialization for seniors. Helpers assist by preparing tables, serving refreshments and just visiting with the participants. Time commitment is about two hours.

RECEPTION DESK

As people enter the Center, they receive a warm greeting from a volunteer at the reception desk. The receptionist makes sure that everyone signs a register as they enter, and helps direct to programs when needed. Each receptionist works a two hour shift.

INTERPRETERS

From time to time there is a need for volunteers who can speak or read a different language. These volunteers are called upon as needed to help relay a conversation or interpret a letter.

FUND-RAISING LEADERSHIP

Volunteer leaders are needed to assist in the planning and coordination of fund-raising activities that the center is engaged in.

FUND-RAISING WORKERS

Help is needed in putting planned fund-raising efforts into effect. Volunteers involved depend on the fund-raising activity, for example, it might be selling tickets at the centre or at other locations.

NEWSPAPER DELIVERY

The L.S.C.O. publishes a no charge monthly newspaper that is distributed to numerous outlets in the city. Volunteers deliver the newspaper to these outlets using a L.S.C.O. van. During the following month volunteers check at the various outlets to insure that copies of the publication are still available.

COMMITTEE MEMBERS

The L.S.C.O. is run by a board of volunteers. Committees are responsible to report to the board for the different activities of the Center. These committees are made up of volunteers.

TICKET SELLERS

Volunteers are recruited to sell tickets for the various special events that take place at the L.S.C.O. It may include collecting names for help with activities. This is a great way to meet people.

LIBRARY

The library at the L.S.C.O. is well used. Volunteers in the library keep the room tidy and help process the many book donations that are made.
